Tell us about your first day at something — school, work, as a parent, etc.

My First Day at School

I still remember my first day at school. It was a new and exciting experience for me. I was both nervous and curious about what would happen. I had heard many stories from my older siblings and friends about school, but I did not know what to expect.

I woke up early that morning and put on my new uniform. It was a blue shirt and a grey pant, with a red tie and a matching belt. I also wore black shoes and white socks. I felt proud and confident in my outfit. I packed my backpack with my books, notebooks, pencils, and lunch box. I also had a water bottle and a small toy car that I liked to play with.

My mother drove me to school. She was very supportive and encouraging. She told me that school was a fun and interesting place, where I would learn many new things and make many new friends. She also said that I should not be afraid or shy, and that I should always be respectful and polite to my teachers and classmates. She gave me a farewell kiss and expressed her wishes for good luck.

I entered the school gate and saw a big building with many windows and doors. There was a playground with swings, slides, and a sandbox. There were also many children of different ages and sizes, wearing the same uniform as me. Some of them were playing, some of them were talking, and some of them were walking to their classrooms. I felt a bit overwhelmed by the sight and sound of so many people.

I looked for my classroom number, which was written on a piece of paper that my mother had given me. It was 1-A, on the first floor. I walked up the stairs and found the door with the sign 1-A. I knocked and entered. There were about 20 desks and chairs, arranged in rows. There was a big blackboard on the front wall, and a teacher’s desk and chair on the side. There were also some posters, charts, and maps on the walls. The room looked bright and colorful.

There were already some children sitting on their desks. They looked at me with curiosity and interest. I felt a bit nervous and shy. I did not know anyone there. I wondered if they would like me or not. I hoped that they would be friendly and nice.

The teacher was a young woman with long brown hair and glasses. She smiled and greeted me. She inquired about my name and place of origin. I told her that my name was Joey and that I lived in the same neighborhood as the school. She said that she was glad to meet me and that she was my class teacher. Her name was Ms. Sharma. She told me to choose a seat and sit down. She also introduced me to the other children in the class. They all said hello and welcomed me. A sense of increased comfort and relaxation settled within me.

Ms. Sharma then started the class. She wrote the date and the subject on the board. It was English. She said that we would learn the alphabet, the sounds of the letters, and some simple words. She also said that we would sing some songs and play some games. She sounded very enthusiastic and cheerful. She made the class interesting and fun. I enjoyed learning and participating. I also liked singing and playing. I felt happy and confident.

The class lasted for about an hour. Then there was a bell that rang. Ms. Sharma said that it was time for a break. She told us to go to the playground and have some snacks. She also said that we should be back in 15 minutes. She reminded us to be careful and safe. She mentioned she’d be seeing us shortly.

I followed the other children to the playground. I saw some of them eating their snacks, some of them drinking water, and some of them playing with their toys. I retrieved my lunch box and unfolded it. I had a sandwich, a banana, and a chocolate bar. I ate my sandwich and my banana. I saved my chocolate bar for later. I took a sip of water from my bottle as well. I felt refreshed and energized.

I looked around and saw a group of children playing with a ball. They were kicking it and passing it to each other. It appeared they were enjoying themselves immensely. I wanted to join them, but I did not know how to ask. I was afraid that they might reject me or laugh at me. I decided to wait and watch.

One of the children saw me and waved at me. He was a boy with short black hair and a friendly smile. He said that his name was Raj and that he was in my class. He asked me if I wanted to play with them. I said yes and smiled back. He said that he was glad and that he would introduce me to his friends. He took me to the group and told them my name. They all said hello and invited me to play. I felt happy and grateful.

We played with the ball for a while. We had a lot of fun. We laughed and cheered. We also talked and shared. I learned that they all liked different things. Raj liked cars and bikes. Priya liked dolls and flowers. Rohan liked books and puzzles. Anjali liked animals and birds. I told them that I liked music and art. They said that they liked them too. We discovered that we shared many similarities. We became friends.

The bell rang again. It was time to go back to the class. We said goodbye to each other and promised to meet again. We ran to our classroom and sat on our desks. Ms. Sharma came and resumed the class. She taught us some more subjects, such as math, science, and social studies. She also gave us some homework and some tips. She said that we should practice what we learned and ask questions if we had any doubts. She said that she was proud of us and that she hoped that we had a good day. She said that she would see us tomorrow.

The class concluded, signaling the moment to head home. I packed my backpack and got ready to leave. I saw Raj and his friends waiting for me. They said that they wanted to walk with me. I said that I would love that. We walked together to the school gate. We talked and joked. We also planned to meet again the next day. We said goodbye and hugged.
