A camping adventure typically involves spending time outdoors, away from urban areas, and setting up temporary shelter, such as a tent. It’s an opportunity to connect with nature, enjoy outdoor activities like hiking or fishing, and experience a break from the routine of daily life. Camping adventures vary in intensity, from simple overnight stays to more extended trips in remote locations.
I remember this phonecall I received from Nisha, my childhood friend. That was during my college days. I was doing masters in engineering from Kharagpur. She was in her final year of bachelor’s degree in medicine from Pune. “Hey there! Ready for our epic camping adventure? I’ve got some amazing recipes to try around the campfire. Can’t wait to explore the great outdoors with you!”, and was saying in a thrilling tone.
Exciting! Nisha is thrilled about an upcoming camping adventure, expressing eagerness to explore the great outdoors and try delicious campfire recipes together. Get ready for a memorable outdoor experience! I was telling myself. Every moment we spend together becomes memorable. I am telling myself.
After deciding about the location, duration, and which friends to invite, we decided to invite a few of our friends. We all assemble at the starting point and had a good round of introduction with each other.
“Oh, I have so many delicious ideas! First off, we can make s’mores using my family’s secret marshmallow mix – a blend of traditional marshmallows and Matcha green tea powder. The combination of chocolate, graham crackers, and this special marshmallow creates an irresistible treat!” says Nisha.
“Next up, how about a Thai-inspired noodle salad made right in our mess kits? We’ll start by cooking rice noodles, then toss them with fresh veggies like cucumber, tomatoes, and bean sprouts. To give it that authentic Thai taste, we’ll whisk together a dressing made from lime juice, fish sauce, sugar, and chili peppers. This refreshing dish will perfectly balance the rich flavors of our campsite cuisine.”, she continues.
We all agreed to it.
“For breakfast, let’s try my mom’s Spanish omelette, known as tortilla de patatas. We’ll slice potatoes thinly and pan-fry them until crispy, then combine them with eggs, onions, garlic, and some smoked paprika for extra depth of flavor. Served warm with some avocado and fresh bread, it’s guaranteed to fuel us up for our day of hiking and exploring.”
“Last but certainly not least, I want to share one of my favorite comfort foods – miso soup. We’ll prepare a light broth infused with the savory umami flavor of miso paste, then add vegetables like daikon radish, scallions, and wakame seaweed. It may seem simple, but trust me, this warm bowl of goodness will hit the spot after a long day spent outside.”
Every one was delighted to know this.
“Thank you! I’m excited to share these dishes with you. Our cultural fusion camping trip will be unlike any other. Just imagine sitting around the campfire, enjoying the beauty of nature while indulging in these incredible flavors from all over the world. And who knows, maybe we’ll discover more culinary adventures along the way! Are you all ready for this gastronomical journey?
“Yeah.”, we all shouted together.
“Great! Then let’s pack our bags and get going. We still have plenty of sunlight left to set up our tent and gather firewood before darkness falls. Don’t forget to bring your appetite, because tonight’s dinner is going to be an unforgettable experience.” She declared.
“Alright, teamwork makes the dream work! Let’s divide tasks accordingly. While I gather dry twigs and branches for kindling, why don’t you set up the tent and organize our sleeping bags?”, She tells Rohit, one of our common friends. “Once we have a cozy shelter, we can focus on preparing dinner.”
Then she moves towards me.
“As you collect sticks, remember to avoid any fallen branches covered in sap or insects. Also, keep an eye out for any dead wood lying close to the base of trees – that’s usually quite dry and perfect for starting a fire. Don’t forget to store our trash securely, leaving only the cleanest materials near our campsite.”
” I hope you’re looking forward to tonight’s feast as much as I am!”
“Yes.”, we all replied excitedly before heading to finish our respective tasks.
Once we all got back, we had a quick round of fresh local tea. And then Nisha stood up in front of us.
“Excellent!”, she said. “Now let’s work efficiently and create a comfortable base camp where we can enjoy our culinary escapades without any distractions. After setting up the tent and arranging our sleeping bags, grab some clean water from the nearby stream to boil for washing dishes later. Remember to purify the water using a filter or purification tablets first.”
She sounded like an expert. We all were rookies in this regard.
“While we wait for the water to heat up, I’ll start preparing the ingredients for our Spanish omelette and miso soup. Don’t worry about chopping too finely; we’ll use a sharp folding knife specifically designed for camping trips. Pack everything neatly into resealable plastic bags to prevent spills during transportation.”
“Once the water reaches a rolling boil, you can help me wash the pots and pans we’ll use for cooking.”
We were following her instructions.
“Perfect! With the basics taken care of, it’s time to focus on cooking. We’ll start with the Thai-inspired noodle salad, as it requires the shortest cooking time. Bring a large pot of water to a boil over the fire, then add the rice noodles according to package instructions. Cook until al dente, drain, and rinse under cold water to stop the cooking process. Set aside.” She said.
Once that was fine, we were again ready for her next instruction.
“Now, let’s move on to the s’mores. Gather around the campfire and arrange your chocolate bars, graham cracker squares, and the specially prepared marshmallows within reach. Using long metal skewers or roasting sticks, carefully toast each component over the flames, being careful not to burn yourself or your friends.”, she guided me.
“As the noodles finish cooking and the s’mores start roasting, let’s prepare the main course. In another pot, sauté sliced onions and minced garlic until fragrant. Then, add the drained rice noodles back to the pot, stirring to coat them evenly with the flavorful oil. Next, add the beaten eggs, breaking them up slightly with a wooden spoon. Finally, pour in the reserved cooking water and season generously with salt, pepper, and some fish sauce for depth of flavor. Stir well to combine all the ingredients, ensuring the eggs are thoroughly incorporated. Remove from heat and cover the pot with a lid, allowing the noodles to rest briefly before serving.”
“While we wait for the noodles to rest, I’ll assemble the miso soup.”
Everything was going smooth.
“Great! Now it’s time to serve up our delightful creations. Start by sharing stories about the different flavors and techniques used in each dish. Explain the history behind Thai-style noodle salads and how the smoky flavor of the grilled marshmallows complements the earthiness of the miso soup. Encourage questions and comments throughout the meal, fostering a friendly atmosphere where everyone feels included and valued.”, she said wanting all of us to get thoroughly engaged in the food to enjoy at its best.
“Once we’ve enjoyed our fill, make sure to clean up after ourselves by properly disposing of waste and returning the campsite to its pristine condition. Leave no trace behind, except perhaps memories of this unforgettable culinary adventure shared among friends.”, that was her next useful instruction.
After a while she asked,” Are you all ready for dessert?
Yes, everybody was eager to grab that.
“Fantastic! Tonight, we’ll treat ourselves to a classic Spanish dessert called flan. To prepare, I have a trusty cast iron skillet filled with a custard mixture made from whole milk, sugar, egg yolks, and vanilla extract. Before adding the custard, we’ll first coat the bottom of the skillet with caramelized sugar.”, she said.
“Carefully melt sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat, swirling constantly until it turns a deep amber color. Pour the hot syrup into the prepared skillet, spreading it evenly across the bottom. Now, pour the custard mixture onto the caramel layer, taking care not to disturb the smooth surface.”, she continued.
“Place the skillet on the embers of the campfire, using some stones or bricks to elevate it above the flames.”
“As the flames lick at the sides of the skillet, the custard begins to set and absorb the flavors of the caramel beneath. Every few minutes, carefully rotate the skillet to ensure even cooking. Once the center jiggles slightly when moved, our flan is ready.”
“To serve, carefully remove the skillet from the fire and let it cool slightly. Run a sharp knife around the edge of the flan, loosening it from the skillet. Place a plate over the top of the skillet, flipping both upside down to release the flan onto the plate.”
“Present the warm, silky flan adorned with a dusting of cinnamon sugar, alongside a cup of freshly brewed coffee or warm tea. Share stories about memorable desserts from your own culture and enjoy the sweet conclusion to our diverse culinary adventure.”
As the last bites of flan disappear, I could see satisfaction etched on everybody’s face. What a wonderful night of sharing stories, flavors, and laughter.
“Now that our bellies are full and our spirits high, it’s time to clean up and wind down. Make sure to gather all trash and dispose of it properly, leaving no trace of our temporary campsite. Store any leftovers in airtight containers to enjoy later or save for breakfast.”, guided Nisha.

The came her final instruction of the beautiful day.
“Snuggle into your sleeping bag, feeling content and connected to the beautiful natural surroundings. Tomorrow brings new adventures, and I look forward to seeing what culinary treasures we might discover along the way. Goodnight, everyone. Sweet dreams.”
