Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) recently unveiled its BeyondReality Studio, a groundbreaking facility designed to prepare students for the rapidly evolving field of virtual production. This state-of-the-art studio represents NYP’s commitment to equipping learners with the necessary skills to thrive in the global entertainment and gaming industries.
With industry-grade virtual production technologies, the studio blends traditional filmmaking techniques with cutting-edge digital advancements. Students will have access to LED Volume Walls, which replace traditional green screens, allowing real-time visualization of virtual sets. Additionally, a camera tracking system ensures dynamic synchronization with camera movements, while Unreal Engine offers photorealistic rendering with real-time adjustments.
The global virtual production market is expected to reach US$10.07 billion by 2032, driven by the demand for high-quality visual effects in movies, TV shows, and commercials. The major players who are confirmed investing heavily in this technology include Disney, Epic Games, and ILM (Industrial Light & Magic). For instance, Disney has used LED video walls extensively for in-house productions, significantly reducing the need for on-location filming.
In the Asia-Pacific region, especially in China, Japan, and South Korea, investments in entertainment have led to rapid growth. Recognizing this trend, NYP’s BeyondReality Studio serves as a unique hub where students can explore Extended Reality (XR), Virtual Production (VP), Augmented/Virtual Reality (AR/VR), Metaverse, Web 3.0, and Generative AI. This multifaceted approach ensures that students are well-prepared for future challenges.
The studio spans 2,500 square feet and features 24 motion capture cameras, a large curved green screen cyclorama, and LED walls, offering students versatile and authentic virtual environments. Moreover, NYP’s investment in LED volume technology places the institute at the forefront of media production innovation in Singapore.
NYP is the first Institute of Higher Learning (IHL) in Singapore to integrate advanced LED volume technology into its curriculum. The facility also boasts a 3-in-1 setup – motion capture, green screen, and LED volume – all under one roof. This unique combination sets NYP apart, providing students with unparalleled learning opportunities.
Additionally, NYP will soon become the first polytechnic in Singapore to receive the official certification of a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 Surround Audio Studio, which will enhance audio production within the BeyondReality Studio. This ensures that students will produce soundtracks that maintain their accuracy and high quality when distributed globally.
Students from various disciplines at NYP will collaborate on real-life virtual production projects. Business Management students will manage production shoots, while Design & Media students will create virtual assets and integrate them into live environments using tools like Unreal Engine. This cross-disciplinary teamwork fosters invaluable experience in managing large-scale projects.
Final-year Diploma in Animation, Games & Visual Effects student, Choy Yu Feng, will leverage the new studio for hands-on learning in his final semester.
“Virtual production is really up and coming,” he remarked. “It will be very useful for me when I graduate, giving me an edge with experience in these new technologies.”
To support continuous learning, creative media professionals can enroll in various courses, ranging from short courses to specialist diplomas. These courses allow for reskilling and upskilling in emerging immersive media technologies, ensuring that industry professionals stay current.
The BeyondReality Studio is poised to set new benchmarks in visual and audio production in Singapore. With its cutting-edge facilities, it fosters a conducive learning environment where students can experiment with new technologies and streamline production workflows.
Mr. Albert Lim, Director at NYP’s School of Design & Media, emphasized,
“We are focused on equipping our students with more than just qualifications. We want to prepare them with the emerging skills necessary to stay at the forefront of media production, whether for further studies or career growth. With our new BeyondReality Studio, our students will gain hands-on experience in creating next-gen immersive media.”
The official opening of the BeyondReality Studio will be conducted by Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Digital Development and Information, Tan Kiat How, on January 24, 2025.

This initiative not only strengthens NYP’s commitment to cutting-edge education but also prepares students to make a significant impact in the entertainment and gaming industries. With a focus on real-world applications, the BeyondReality Studio ensures that students have the skills to excel in this emerging field.
