Whimsical Time: A Playful Limerick About a Clock’s Emotional Journey

W3 Prompt #115: Wea’ve Written Weekly

Whimsical Time: A Playful Limerick About a Clock's Emotional Journey
This image is of a whimsical clock with expressive, animated faces around it, showing various emotions. The clock itself has a joyful, silly smile.

Create a limerick inspired by the image above.
How to write a limerick
Create an AABBA rhyme scheme. A limerick has five lines. The first, second, and fifth line should rhyme with each other. This is rhyme “A.” To create rhyme “B,” rhyme the third and fourth lines with each other. “A” and “B” should be different.
Use a syllable scheme. In addition to rhyme, the poem should follow a syllable scheme where the first, second, and fifth lines have eight or nine syllables. The third and fourth lines will have five or six syllables.
Follow a meter. The meter of the limerick is the number of beats, or stressed syllables, in each line. A limerick will follow a meter that goes 3, 3, 2, 2, 3. You can also use “da” for unstressed syllables and “DUM” for stressed syllables.

Here’s a limerick inspired by the image of a whimsical clock with expressive faces:

There once was a clock with a grin,
Its faces showed moods thick and thin.
With joy it would chime,
"It's always fun time!"
As emotions went 'round with a spin.

This limerick follows the AABBA rhyme scheme and the syllable count guidelines. Let’s break it down:

  1. “There once was a clock with a grin,” (8 syllables, A rhyme)
  2. “Its faces showed moods thick and thin.” (8 syllables, A rhyme)
  3. “With joy it would chime,” (6 syllables, B rhyme)
  4. “It’s always fun time!” (5 syllables, B rhyme)
  5. “As emotions went ’round with a spin.” (9 syllables, A rhyme)

The meter roughly follows the 3-3-2-2-3 pattern:

  1. DUM da da DUM da da DUM
  2. da DUM da DUM DUM da DUM
  3. da DUM da da DUM
  4. da DUM da DUM DUM
  5. da da DUM da DUM da da DUM

This limerick captures the whimsical nature of the clock, its joyful smile, and the various emotions displayed by the faces around it. The idea of time being fun and emotions spinning around adds to the playful imagery suggested by the prompt.
