Making Friends by Andrew Matthews: A Perfect Guide to Getting Along with People

Author and Illustrator: Andrew Matthews
Published: October 28, 2012

Introduction

In the bustling corridors of our daily lives, getting along with people is an essential skill that can make a significant difference in our personal and professional success. Andrew Matthews, the author of the international bestseller Being Happy, offers a perfect guide to mastering this skill in his book Making Friends. This book is not just a collection of tips but a comprehensive teacher for anyone looking to improve their relationships, understand others better, and navigate social interactions with ease.

Understanding Relationships

Making Friends delves into the nuances of human relationships, focusing on understanding people’s attitudes and personalities. Matthews emphasizes the importance of self-improvement and personal growth as the foundation for better interactions with others. He advises readers to confront their weaknesses and seek feedback to understand why they might be ignored or misunderstood.

Key Lessons from the Book

  1. Self-Acceptance and Improvement: Matthews stresses the importance of liking oneself while also striving to improve. He encourages readers not to get bogged down by criticism but to use it as a tool for personal development.
  2. Avoid Comparisons: Comparing oneself to others can lead to unnecessary depression. Matthews suggests embracing one’s unique identity and avoiding the pitfalls of self-comparison.
  3. Be Proactive: Instead of waiting for others to reach out, Matthews advises taking the initiative. Throw a party, invite people, and break the cycle of isolation.
  4. Embrace Change: Change is inevitable and often beneficial. Matthews encourages readers to welcome change rather than fear it, as it can lead to personal growth and new opportunities.
  5. Quit Playing Games: Honest communication is crucial. Matthews illustrates this with examples of how miscommunication and assumptions can lead to misunderstandings in relationships.
  6. Living Authentically: Live according to your belief system and be true to yourself. Matthews provides examples of how self-perception can influence how others perceive and interact with us.

Practical Examples

The book is filled with practical examples and humorous illustrations that make the lessons engaging and easy to understand. For instance, Matthews talks about Mary, who struggles with self-esteem, and Lucy, who believes in the goodness of people. Their contrasting attitudes demonstrate how our beliefs shape our social experiences.

About the Book

Making Friends is not just about making new friends but also about maintaining and improving existing relationships. It covers various aspects such as dealing with negativity, saying no, and handling gossip and anger. The book’s light-hearted yet profound approach makes it an enjoyable read with serious learning outcomes.

About the Author

Andrew Matthews is based in Adelaide, South Australia. His first book, Being Happy, became a worldwide phenomenon after its release in 1988. Matthews is known for his writing, illustrating, and public speaking talents, which are in great demand across North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia.

I totally agree with the aspect of embracing change and being proactive. I have learned it the hard way but I am also bowed out of spaces where I can sense I am not wanted. To maintain my own sanity perhaps.

While a book on how to make friends may be really helpful – especially if it helps you understand yourself better – I use the tried and tested formula. I let them adopt me ๐Ÿคฃ

I remember reading a few other books on making friends as I’m very introverted, and I think back then I was going through the phase of “It’s not me, it ‘s them.” attitude. There’s so much importance given to individuality nowadays that the smallest criticism from friends can feel like they are not on our wavelength or they’re not right for us. But, if one were to follow the simple things given in this book, real bonds are possible. Great post highlighting the key parts. Will check it out ~
