The Echo Game: A nursery rhyme for grown-ups

Hickory dickory dock,
The children play around the block,
While mothers weep
In silence deep—
An echo of each ticking clock.

Ring around the rosie now,
The factories burn, but tell me how
We pocket fall,
We pocket all,
Then wonder why the earth won't bow.

London Bridge keeps falling down,
While refugees flee every town,
My fair lady,
Grows more shady—
Her golden hair a thorny crown.

Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With plastic bells
And oil well shells
And pretty maids all in a row
Of unmarked graves below.

Rock-a-bye baby, don't you cry,
The polar bears are waving bye,
When the ice breaks,
For heaven's sakes,
Down will come species, you and I.

Clap your hands and stamp your feet!
Dance until the world's complete!
Sing along now, don't you fret—
Some echoes we can't forget.

Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are,
Up above the smog so high,
Like a diamond in the sky—
If we haven't gone too far.

Congratulations on being POW! These were fun to read while a very somber message. I took a similar route as you in choosing a nursery rhyme to fashion my poem after.

Jaideep, this was such a powerful nursery rhyme reimagining—both haunting and lyrical. I really appreciate the way you turned playful rhythms into such urgent echoes of our world.

Thank you for setting such a thought-provoking W³ prompt this week!
